Apologies to those I can’t identify and to those I got wrong…I invite corrections and identities I didn’t name.

As indicated by the team’s record, this was a very successful season. Following the season opening 26-13 loss in Clarinda, (a game this 5th grader attended), it was apparent the Admirals were going to be tough to beat. They finished the season by winning nine consecutive games and claimed the Corner Conference Championship.

After dropping the first game of the season to Clarinda, The Admirals came on very strong to win the next 9 straight games and to win the Corner Conference Crown. The Admirals, led by an all-junior backfield, piled up 312 points compared to their opponent’s 87. There are only seven seniors leaving the squad this year, and the remaining boys should have enough experience to lead the team to another Conference title.

Good luck in ’64-’65 Yearbook Staff

Why Clarinda ?

Many times the question was asked: “Why is Farragut playing Clarinda?”

Clarinda is a bigger school and they were a member of the competitive Hawkeye 7 Conference that, at the time, also included Shenandoah, Atlantic, Creston, Glenwood, Red Oak, and Corning. On that August night in 1963, the Clarinda Cardinals entered the game as Hawkeye 7 Conference Champions during the past two seasons.

The question seemed a fair one to ask. Why would Farragut, a small school from a conference of small schools, schedule a bigger and very competitive Clarinda team?

The first answer: Coach Hackett was confident his Admiral team would be competitive and he knew that a season opening game against a quality opponent, regardless of the outcome, would benefit his team.

The second answer: The head coach of the Clarinda Cardinals was Jerry Trullinger.  Jerry graduated from Farragut High School in the Class of 1951. He excelled playing 6-man football for Coach Hackett, earning 3rd team All-State honors in 1949 and 2nd Team All-State honors in 1950.

This relationship led to Clarinda vs Farragut season opening games for a few seasons. The game played in 1963 was Jerry’s final game in this competition because in 1964 he relinquished his coaching duties when he became the Clarinda High School Principal. He later moved on to Marshalltown where he completed a lengthy career in Administration of that school district.
