John Franklin Thomas was born August 25, 1920 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the son of Joy D. and Ruth (Travis) Thomas. He passed away early on Friday morning, November 27, 2009 at the Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 89 years, 3 months and 2 days. John grew up near Farragut and graduated from Farragut High School in 1939. He later attended Business School in Grand Island, Nebraska. John served in the United States Navy for four years as a Machinist Mate 1st class on the island of New Caledonia. After returning from the service John married, farmed and was part of the Farragut community. On February 4, 1946, John was united in Marriage to Margaret Ethel Smith in Macedonia, Iowa. This union was blessed with two children, Ed and Beth. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of the Farm Bureau, member of the American Legion and was a past member of the Elks Lodge. John was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Margaret Smith Thomas. Survivors include his children, Ed Thomas and Sheri Barna of Queen Creek, Arizona, Beth Haigh and her husband Gene of Urbandale, Iowa; five grandchildren, Jason Haigh and his wife Lori of Clive, Iowa, Brad Haigh and his wife Natalie of Chicago, Illinois, Curtis Cook of Atlantic, Iowa, Carissa LeMark and her husband George of Omaha, Nebraska, Clint Thomas of Palm Springs, California; along with many other caring relatives and friends.
