Mildred Maxine Polk was born September 7, 1919 to Wayne and Merle (Howard) Polk in Sidney, Iowa. Mildred lived most of her life in Fremont County, Iowa. Education was very important to Mildred. She graduated from Sidney High School in 1936. She graduated from Peru State Teachers' College with a Bachelor's Degree in Education, from Omaha University with a Master's Degree in Education, and from Omaha University with a Specialist Degree in Education and Administration. Mildred taught school for over 40 years and, also, served as elementary principal. She started her teaching career in a country school teaching grades 1-8. Most of her teaching career was spent at Farragut Community School, Farragut, Iowa.
