1880s school
In 1880, the Independent District of Farragut was set off from Fisher Township. The new district held its first meeting on April 10. It took steps to erect a new school house. Described as the “very best school building around”, a two-story brick 30 by 50 foot building was contracted for $4,700. It had a 10 by 40 foot entrance and hallway. Four reciting benches and six seats with backs were purchased on October 4. They were to cost $60. The large assembly room, Chandler’s Hall, was used for many public entertainments.
In 1909, an addition was built on to the school to accommodate the increasing number of students. It contained a larger assembly room, recitation rooms, and grade rooms.
This building was located north of the Congregational Church, on the east side of Tecumseh Ave.
