Sherry Honnold passed away on April 16th, 2025 at the age of 71 in the presence of her dearly loved family. The passing of her servant heart has left a large hole that will never be filled.
Sherry Ann (Latimer) Honnold was born on August 20th, 1953 to Lyle and Harriette (Roscoe) Latimer.
Sherry attended Farragut High School, earned her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and Special Education from the University of Northern Iowa and later her Master’s Degree in Higher Education from Northwest Missouri State University.
Sherry's education proved to be a foundation for a career where she built many friendships but also helped guide the future of so many students who still speak of her impact today. Sherry taught for 39 years and was employed by Plainview Community School District, Norfolk Community School District and Clarinda Community School District where she retired in May of 2014.
While studying at the University of Northern Iowa, Sherry met and fell in love with Paul Honnold. Their bond would become an example of strength, devotion and love for the family they were to build together. They were married on June 1st, 1974 in Shenandoah, Iowa. To this union they were blessed with 3 boys: Brad, Brian and Brandon (BJ).
While always busy raising a family with Paul, teaching her students, being a daughter or friend - Sherry found a way to make things happen. There are countless stories of Sherry's quiet demeanor and kind presence, however underneath that there was an extremely driven individual who managed to successfully meet the needs of anyone around her. Sherry was given the nickname “coon dog” for her ability to find anything including a mother’s ring her mother-in-law thought was gone forever in the garden. It is not uncommon to hear her boys say “coon dog will find it” no matter what was missing. This 7th sense not only endeared her to those around her but showed her devotion to providing what was needed.
Sherry's devotion bloomed when she and Paul were blessed with Grandchildren: Ali, Ashton, Arik, Asa, Moxie, Isaac, Onyx and Brixen. Each child's bond with Grandma Sherry was unique and has no doubt left an imprint they will carry with them. Sherry's unwavering love was shown in so many ways. Simple things such as reading books together, always having the right kind of binkies, or being at everything she possibly could showed her love and devotion. She also always made sure to have snacks, which she knew never hurt! On one particular occasion at a wrestling venue no food was allowed, but that did not stop Grandma Sherry. She earned even more love and respect from everyone when she proceeded to pull teddy grahams packets out of her wrist cast, saving everyone from their hunger pains!!
Sherry's legacy is one that will be felt for generations including her love of the Chicago Bears and Iowa State Cyclones. Her family will continue to share the things she has done for them and the impacts will continue to be seen. Her servant heart shined through at every holiday with her preparation further in advance than anyone ever realized to make the celebrations wonderful. Her videos after wrestling matches, soccer matches, baseball or softball games will be irreplaceable - no one has a hand as steady as hers or can keep as quiet as she did. She will be missed standing quietly beside listening to stories or discussions of wrestling and at times raising an eyebrow at Paul when his account of things may not have been entirely accurate. No one will ever forget the way she pointed her finger, led a conversation with “well I say…” or her side smile that lent to just a little bit of orneriness about her.
Sherry is survived by her husband Paul, Sons Brad (Sara), Brian (Beth) and Brandon “BJ” (Whitney). Her 8 Grandchildren Ali, Ashton, Arik, Asa, Moxie, Isaac, Onyx and Brixen. Her siblings Gary (Janet) Latimer, Larry (Deb) Lattimer and Mary Holbrook. Her mother-in-law Edna Honnold as well as her brother and sisters-in-law Darrel Honnold (Pam), Patty Schultz (Donnie), and Dwight Honnold (Lynn).
Sherry is preceded in death by her parents Lyle and Harriette Latimer, her father-in-law Duane Honnold and brother-in-law Jerry Holbrook.
