1971 Iowa Girl’s High School State Champions
Farragut’s basketball team did it again! Sweeping tournaments and piling up victories, Plummer’s girls made Admiral Town proud.
The Adettes started a rough season with their first six games played away from home. They proved their strength by winning those six games plus twenty-four more.
Their strongest Corner Conference competition was Malvern, whom they played four times throughout the season. They won both the Corner Conference title and the Sectional Tournament by defeating Malvern.
Beating Villisca and Tri-Center in District action, the Adettes became one of the Sweet-Sixteen to see State Tournament action for the third year in a row.
In the first round of state action, the Adettes rolled over Hampton and advanced to meet Elk Horn-Kimballton in a nerve wracking one that Farragut won with a score of 59-57.
After the Adette’s slow start against West Marshall, the girls came from behind to win by twelve points. Even though Mediapolis was expected to tromp Farragut rather easily, the Adettes had a different idea. With a one-point lead at halftime, the Adettes came back with a stunning performance. During the third and fourth quarters, Coach Plummer’s crew went into a stall. The Adettes and Coaches Plummer and Livingston won their first State Championship. – Admiral Yearbook Staff
